Thank you for your support. HWOP is grateful as are our recipients.
Society has strong opinions about prison rehabilitation, and you will draw your own conclusions based on your knowledge and experiences. As someone who spends an inordinate amount of time working closely with the men, my experiences have taught me that there is good in all of us. The trials and tribulations of prison are many, and it is heart breaking to hear their stories. Lives cast away, forgotten, abandoned or relinquished. Some transitioned from juvenile hall to adult prison; others entered prison in their teens with LWOP sentences, or as adults with Life terms, or maybe just a few years of prison. But despite this, many radiate positivity and courage, and contribute to their yard or community. Not all programs are eligible for milestone credit, so these groups and their founders do it for purely altruistic reasons of helping their fellow men. They are all volunteers, as am I. Over the years, I have seen many of my AVP facilitators parole successfully and lead great lives; I see those that are left behind toiling very hard for that elusive parole dream. Going home to their loved ones, or living a custody free life is a hope many have, and it is that hope that has continued to pull me back, and has compelled me into creating HWOP to support their quest for a chance at redemption, or simply make the best of what they have today. Perhaps your donation is not in our cards today, but we will gladly trade it for your well wishes, and for your consideration that behind those prison walls are husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, daughters, sons, uncles, nephews, and a whole lot more, wanting one more chance at life. It is my simple plea to you. Thank you. Chandrika Kelso
